Itraconazole 100 mg capsules
What is itraconazole and what is it used for?
- It is an azole antifungal, and is used mainly to treat nail fungus.
- Additionally, itraconazole is used to treat the following fungal infections when it is believed that they are likely to be susceptible:
- Vulvovaginal candidiasis.
- Oral candidiasis.
Do not take itraconazole:
- Hypersensitivity to itraconazole
- You have heart problems (congestive heart problems).
Warnings and precautions:
- Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking itraconazole to monitor:
- If you have a history of heart problems
- If you have liver problems
- If you know that stomach acidity is low
- Capsules and oral solution should not be used interchangeably.
Possible side effects:
Other medications and itraconazole:
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements.
- Do not use these drugs while taking itraconazole due to increased toxicity: cisapride, midazolam, nisoldipine, felodipine, pimozide, quinidine, dofetilide, triazolam, methadone and levacetylmethadol.
- Do not take lovastatin, simvastatin, or any HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (i.e., a statin) with itraconazole.
- Do not take ergot alkaloids metabolized by CYP3A4 such as dihydroergotamine, ergotamine (ergonovine), ergotamine, and methylergonovine (methylergonovine) with itraconazole.
How to take itraconazole:
- Adults over 18 years: Usual dose for fungal nail infections only:
- Two treatment courses, each consisting of 200 mg (2 capsules) twice a day (400 mg/day) for one week. A three-week break without itraconazole.
How to take itraconazole:
- Itraconazole capsules should be taken after a full meal.
- Separate it from taking it with antacids or gastric secretion inhibitors.
- It can be taken at any time of day
- Do not break the capsule in half
How to store itraconazole:
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
- Store at room temperature [77°F (25°C)].
- Do not store above 30 degrees.
