Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg/12.5 mg Coated Tablets


What is Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide and what is it used for?


Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, and hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic. Angiotensin II is a substance produced by the body that binds to receptors in blood vessels, causing them to constrict.

This medicine is used to treat essential hypertension (high blood pressure).


Do not take losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide.


• If you are allergic to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,

• If you are allergic to other sulfonamide derivatives.

• If you suffer from severe liver dysfunction

• If you have low levels of potassium or sodium or high levels of calcium that cannot be corrected by treatment

• If you are more than 3 months pregnant

• If you have severely impaired kidney function or if your kidneys are not producing any urine

• If you have diabetes or kidney dysfunction and are being treated with a blood pressure lowering medicine containing aliskiren.


Warnings and precautions


Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this combination:

• If you have previously experienced swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.

• If you are taking diuretics (water pills).

• If you are on a salt-restricted diet

• If you are suffering or have suffered from severe vomiting and/or diarrhea.

• If you have heart failure.

• If you have impaired liver function.

• If you have narrowed arteries in your kidneys, if you have only one functioning kidney, or if you have recently had a kidney transplant

• If you have narrowed arteries, angina.

• If you have aortic or mitral valve stenosis or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

• If you have diabetes.

• If you have had gout.

• If you have or have had an allergy, asthma, or a condition that causes joint pain, rash, or fever

• If you have high calcium or low potassium levels or are on a low potassium diet.


Possible side effects of losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide


Common side effects:


• Cough, upper airway infection, nasal congestion, sinusitis, sinus disorder.

• Diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and indigestion.

• Muscle pain or cramps, leg pain, back pain.

• Insomnia, headache and dizziness.

• Weakness, fatigue, chest pain.

• Increased potassium levels and decreased hemoglobin levels.

• Changes in kidney function, including kidney failure.

• Severe low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).


Other medications, including losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide


Many medications can interact with this medication, significantly altering its effects. These medications include:


• Potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, potassium-sparing medications, or other medications that may increase the level of potassium in the blood

• Other medications to lower blood pressure.

• Stimulants;

• Drugs for cancer treatment.

• Pain relievers.

• Medicines to treat fungal infections.

• Arthritis medications.

• Resins used for high cholesterol, such as cholestyramine.

• Medicines that relax your muscles.

• Sleeping pills.

• Opioid medications such as morphine.

• Oral agents for diabetes or insulin.


How to take Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide


The usual dose of losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide for most patients with high blood pressure is:

One Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg/12.5 mg tablet daily is used to control blood pressure over 24 hours. This may be increased to two Losartan/Hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg/12.5 mg tablets once daily. The maximum daily dose is two Losartan/Hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg/12.5 mg film-coated tablets once daily.


• The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.


How to store Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide


Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the package. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

• Store this medicine in the original package to protect it from light and moisture. Do not store the package above 30°C.

• Store in the original container to protect from light. Keep the bottle tightly closed to protect from moisture. Do not store the bottle above 25°C.

• Do not dispose of medications via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.
