Product Description:

  • Moxifloxacin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
  • This medication belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics.
  • It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
  • It only treats diseases caused by bacteria.
  • It will not work for viral infections (such as colds or flu).
  • Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can make it ineffective for future infections.

Directions for use:

acute bacterial sinusitis

  • 400 mg oral tablet once daily for 5-10 days

Limits of use:

  • Reserve fluoroquinolones for patients who have no other treatment options available for acute sinusitis.

Community-acquired pneumonia:

  • 400 mg tablet orally once daily for 7-14 days

Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis:

  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by bacterial infections is indicated.
  • 400 mg tablet orally once daily for 5 days

Limits of use:

  • Reserve fluoroquinolones for patients with no other treatment options available for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.

Skin and skin structure infections:

Uncomplicated:

  • 400 mg oral tablet once daily for 7 days

complicated:

  • 400 mg tablet orally once daily for 7-21 days

intra-abdominal infections

complicated:

  • 400 mg tablet orally once daily for 5-14 days.

Pneumonic plague and septicemia:

  • It is indicated for adults for the treatment of plague, including pneumonic plague and septicemia, caused by susceptible isolates of Yersinia pestis; it is also used for the prevention of plague in adults.
  • 400 mg tablet orally once daily for 10-14 days.
  • Initiate administration as soon as possible after suspected or confirmed exposure to Yersinia pestis.

Children's dosage (ages 0 to 17 years):

  • This medicine has not been shown to be safe and effective for use in children under 18 years of age.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • It is very important that your doctor check your progress at regular visits while you are using this medication to make sure that this medication is working properly.
  • Blood and urine tests are needed to check for any unwanted effects.
  • If you have low levels of potassium in your blood, moxifloxacin may increase your risk of fast, slow, or irregular heartbeats, loss of consciousness, or fainting spells.
  • If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor immediately.
  • This medication may cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.
  • Call your doctor right away if you have itching, hives, hoarseness, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, or any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth after taking this medicine.
  • Serious side effects can occur during treatment with this medication and can sometimes occur without warning. Possible warning signs include black or tarry stools, sores, peeling, or loose skin, bloody or cloudy urine, chills, decreased urination, diarrhea, fever, joint or muscle pain, red skin lesions, often with a purple center, blisters, ulcers, or white patches in the mouth or on the lips, severe stomach pain, rash, swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs, unusual bleeding or bruising, unusual weight gain, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
  • Consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of these warning signs.
  • Moxifloxacin may reduce the number of some types of blood cells in your body.
  • Because of this, you may bleed or get infected more easily.
  • To help solve these problems, avoid being near people who are sick or have an infection.
  • Wash your hands often. Avoid contact sports or other situations where you may get bruised, cut, or injured.
  • Brush and floss your teeth gently. Be careful when using sharp objects, including razors and nail clippers.
  • Moxifloxacin may cause diarrhea, and in some cases it can be severe.
  • It may occur two months or more after stopping this medicine.
  • Do not take any medication to treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor first.
  • Diarrhea medications may make diarrhea worse or last longer.
  • If you have any questions about this or if mild diarrhea persists or worsens, consult your doctor.
