Lercanidipine Hydrochloride 10 mg Tablets

What is lercanidipine hydrochloride and what is it used for?

  • Lercanidipine hydrochloride is a medicine used to treat mild to moderate essential hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries).

Do not take lercanidipine hydrochloride:

  • If you are allergic to lercanidipine hydrochloride, any other dihydropyridine, or any of the ingredients in this medication, tell your doctor about the allergy and any signs you experience.
  • If you have ventricular outflow tract obstruction (a heart problem that affects blood flow).
  • If you have untreated congestive heart failure (a medical condition that makes your heart muscle unable to pump blood properly, causing side effects such as swelling of the feet, bloating, shortness of breath, fatigue, feeling tired, and shortness of breath with exertion).
  • If you are taking cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant used to prevent organ transplant rejection), ketoconazole or itraconazole (used for fungal infections), ritonavir (used for HIV), erythromycin or troleandomycin (antibiotics), or grapefruit juice.
  • If you have unstable angina (your heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen due to blocked blood vessels).
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have had a heart attack within the last month.
  • If you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • If you are a woman of childbearing age and are not using any method of contraception.
  • If you have lactase deficiency (the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose), galactosemia, or glucose/galactose malabsorption syndrome (problems absorbing galactose and glucose).

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Be sure to tell your doctor about any heart problems you have, such as heart failure or angina.
  • Be sure to tell your doctor about any liver or kidney problems you have.
  • Do not drink alcohol when taking this medicine.

Possible side effects of lercanidipine hydrochloride:

  • Possible side effects of lercanidipine hydrochloride include allergic reaction, skin rash, indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, muscle pain, increased urination, fatigue, weakness, palpitations, headache, swelling of the ankles, lower legs, or feet, flushing, fatigue, and dizziness.

Other medications and lercanidipine hydrochloride:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any of the following medicines:

  • If you are taking anticonvulsants (used for seizures), such as phenytoin and carbamazepine.
  • If you are taking rifampicin (used mainly for tuberculosis).
  • If you are taking antifungals (used to treat fungal infections), such as ketoconazole and itraconazole.
  • If you are taking ritonavir (used to treat HIV).
  • If you are taking erythromycin or troleandomycin (antibiotics).
  • If you are taking cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant used to prevent organ transplant rejection).
  • If you are taking midazolam (used for sedation and difficulty sleeping).
  • If you are taking digoxin (used for certain heart problems).
  • If you are taking cimetidine (used to reduce stomach acid).
  • If you are taking terfenadine or astemizole (used for allergies).
  • If you are taking Class III antiarrhythmic drugs, such as amiodarone and quinidine (used for some types of irregular heartbeat).
  • If you are taking beta-blockers, such as metoprolol (used for some heart problems).

How to take lercanidipine hydrochloride:

Adults:

  • The recommended daily dose is 10 mg orally once a day. The dose may be increased to 20 mg depending on your response to the medication. Your doctor may gradually change the dose because it takes about two weeks for the medication to achieve its optimal effect in lowering blood pressure to normal.

Children and adolescents (under 18 years of age):

  • This medicine is not recommended for children and adolescents.
  • Take one tablet at least 15 minutes before meals.
  • Take the tablet with a full glass of water.
  • Your doctor may prescribe other blood pressure lowering medications to be taken with this medicine depending on your condition.
  • Take the medicine at the same time every day.
  • Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
  • Do not take grapefruit juice with this medicine.

How to store lercanidipine hydrochloride:

  • Do not store the medicine above 30°C.
  • Keep this medicine out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not use the medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton.
  • Keep the medicine in its original package to protect it from moisture and light.
  • Do not use damaged grains.
  • Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste.
