Why is digoxin used?

  • Digoxin is used to treat irregular heartbeats and heart failure (weak heart).

Do not take digoxin:

  • If you are allergic to the active ingredients or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • If you have problems with the electrical conduction system in your heart, especially Stokes-Adams syndrome.
  • If you have an irregular heartbeat due to glycoside poisoning or conditions such as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
  • If you have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart muscle).

Warnings and Precautions:

Tell your doctor about all your health conditions, including:

  • If you have other heart problems.
  • If you have breathing problems.
  • If you have had a heart attack before.
  • If you have thyroid problems.
  • If you have abnormal levels of potassium, magnesium, or calcium in your blood.
  • This medication may cause other heart problems with symptoms similar to yours. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms persist.

Possible side effects:

  • Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is not known.

Serious side effects:

  • Heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, or sweating.
  • These could be symptoms of a serious heart problem caused by a new irregular heartbeat. Contact your doctor.

Other medications and digoxin:

  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take.

Digoxin interacts with many drugs including:

  • Medications that affect the heart
  • Diuretics (water pills)
  • lithium
  • corticosteroids
  • antifungals
  • antibiotics
  • Antivirals
  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • antacids
  • blood pressure medications


How to take digoxin:

  • Take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor.
  • Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage for you based on your condition and its severity.
  • The injection should be given as a slow intravenous infusion over 10 to 20 minutes.
  • First, you'll be given a loading dose to quickly raise your digoxin levels to the correct level. This dose is usually between 0.75 and 1 mg.
  • You will then take the maintenance dose daily. This is usually between 0.125 and 0.25 mg daily.

How to store digoxin:

  • Store at room temperature below 77°F (25°C).
  • Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton.

*The form and method of administration of Digoxin 0.25 mg tablets, 0.0625 mg tablets, 0.25 mg/ml solution for injection, 0.05 mg/ml elixir should be determined according to the therapeutic indication and severity of the disease for each individual patient.
