Apixaban 2.5 mg coated tablets
Why are Apixaban coated tablets used?
Apixaban coated tablets are used in adults:
To prevent blood clots in the heart in patients with an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) and at least one additional risk factor.
To treat blood clots in the veins of your legs (deep vein thrombosis) and in the blood vessels of your lungs (pulmonary embolism), and to prevent recurrence of blood clots in the blood vessels of your legs and/or lungs.
Do not take apixaban coated tablets if:
You are allergic to apixaban or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
severe bleeding
You have a disease in one of your body organs that increases your risk of serious bleeding.
You have liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.
You are taking medications to prevent blood clotting (eg, warfarin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, or heparin)
Warnings and precautions:
Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking this medicine if you have any of the following:
Increased risk of bleeding, such as:
bleeding disorders
Severe high blood pressure that is not controlled by medical treatment
You are over 75 years old
You weigh 60 kg or less
Severe kidney disease or if you are on dialysis
Liver problem or history of liver problems
Possible side effects:
Like all medicines, this medication can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common side effect of apixaban tablets is bleeding, which can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
Other medicines and apixaban coated tablets:
The following medications may increase the effect of apixaban coated tablets and increase the chance of unwanted bleeding:
Some medications for fungal infections (such as ketoconazole, etc.)
Some antiviral medications for HIV/AIDS (such as ritonavir)
Other medications used to reduce blood clotting (eg, enoxaparin, etc.)
Anti-inflammatory and pain medications (such as acetylsalicylic acid or naproxen).
Medicines for high blood pressure or heart problems (such as diltiazem)
antidepressants
How to take apixaban coated tablets:
To prevent blood clots in the heart in patients with an irregular heartbeat and at least one additional risk factor.
The recommended dose is one 5 mg apixaban coated tablet twice a day.
The recommended dose is one 2.5 mg apixaban tablet twice a day if:
You have severe kidney failure.
Two or more of the following apply to you:
Blood test results indicate poor kidney function.
You are 80 years of age or older
Your weight is 60 kg or less
How to store apixaban coated tablets:
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton and on the blister after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.
Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste.
