Dextromethorphan 15 mg/5 ml Syrup
Why is dextromethorphan used?
It is a medication used to help relieve a dry, irritating cough. The liquid contains dextromethorphan hydrobromide, an antitussive to help stop a persistent cough.
Do not use dextromethorphan.
• If you have ever had a bad reaction to dextromethorphan or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• If you have lung disease
• If you are taking, or have taken within the past two weeks, medicines for depression known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
• If you are taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (used to treat depression and anxiety, such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline)
• For children under 12 years of age
Warnings and precautions
• If you have liver problems.
• If you have chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, or have had a cough for a few weeks or cough with a lot of mucus (phlegm).
• If you are taking any other cough and cold medicines.
• If your child is prone to developing certain allergic reactions (such as atopic reactions).
• If you are addicted or have ever been addicted to opioids, alcohol, prescription drugs, or illegal drugs.
• If you have previously experienced withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, shakiness, or sweating, when stopping alcohol or drugs.
• If your doctor has told you that you are a poor metabolizer of CYP2D6.
Possible side effects
Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if you experience throat tightness, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue, feel faint, or have difficulty breathing. Stop using the product if you experience hives or itching of the face or body.
Other medications and dextromethorphan
If you are taking any other medications, including:
• Certain medications to treat depression, such as norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs), which include bupropion
• Antipsychotics (medicines used to treat mood disorders such as haloperidol, thioridazine, perphenazine)
• Antiarrhythmic agents (drugs used to treat irregular heartbeats such as amiodarone, propafenone, quinidine, and flecainide)
• Calcium-mimetic agents (drugs used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism, high parathyroid hormone levels such as cinacalcet)
• Antifungal (terbinafine)
• Opioid analgesics
How to use dextromethorphan
Adults and children 12 years and over: Take one 5 ml spoonful four times a day.
How to store dextromethorphan
Do not store above 30°C.
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the carton after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste.
