Product description:

  • Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is an antibiotic that combines sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The two drugs work together to block a chemical that some bacteria produce in order to grow.
  • Once the chemical is stopped, the bacteria cease to grow and multiply.

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is used for:

  • Urinary tract infection.
  • Traveler's diarrhea in adults.
  • Middle ear infections in children.
  • Chronic bronchitis irritation in adults.
  • Pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems.
  • Prevention of pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems.
  • Shigellosis (fever and diarrhea caused by Shigella bacteria).

Usage guidelines:

  • Typical dosages for Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim)

Urinary tract infections, shigellosis, and middle ear infections:

  • The typical adult dose of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is 800 mg/160 mg (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) taken orally every 12 hours for 5 to 14 days.
  • The length of time you take antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) depends on the type of infection you have and how severe it is.
  • The dose given to children depends on their weight and is taken orally every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days.

Chronic bronchitis flare-ups in adults:

  • The typical dose of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is 800 mg/160 mg (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) taken orally every 12 hours for 14 days.

Pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems:

  • The typical dose of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) for both adults and children is based on your weight and is taken orally every 6 hours for 14 to 21 days.

Prevention of pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems:

  • The typical adult dose of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is 800 mg/160 mg (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) taken orally once daily.
  • The dose given to children depends on their body size and is taken orally twice a day for 3 consecutive days a week.
  • The maximum daily dose of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) for children is 1600 mg/320 mg (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim).
  • Traveler's diarrhea in adults: The typical dose of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is 800 mg/160 mg (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) taken orally every 12 hours for 5 days.

Warnings and precautions:

  • Before taking sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to sulfa drugs or trimethoprim; or if you have any other allergies.
  • This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially about:

  • Kidney diseases, liver diseases, some blood diseases (such as porphyria, anemia due to folate deficiency).
  • A history of blood disorders caused by trimethoprim or sulfa drugs, and vitamin deficiencies (folic acid or folic acid).
  • Severe allergies, asthma, decreased bone marrow function (bone marrow suppression), a certain metabolic disorder (G6PD deficiency), and hypothyroidism.
  • Mineral imbalances (such as high potassium or low sodium levels in the blood).

  • This medication may make you more sensitive to sunlight.
  • Reduce your time in the sun.
  • Avoid tanning booths and solar lamps.
  • Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you are outside.
  • Get medical help immediately if you get sunburned or have blisters/redness on your skin.
