How calcium and vitamin D work
Calcium is an ingredient found in many prescription supplements or formulas as well as those used for medical conditions associated with calcium deficiency.
Calcium is an essential element in bone formation.
Calcium helps reduce the chances of developing osteoporosis by preventing or slowing the rate of bone loss.
Calcium also participates in maintaining normal heart function.
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin (a fat-soluble vitamin) with many biological benefits, some of which include increasing intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate.
Vitamin D also prevents calcium loss from the kidneys.

Tips to avoid calcium deficiency and maintain bone health
There are many calcium-rich foods that can help you maintain a healthy level of calcium in your blood, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese.
When it comes to healthy bones and preventing osteoporosis, calcium alone isn't enough. Several other nutrients help your body absorb and utilize the calcium you consume. These include magnesium and vitamin D.
Be careful about your caffeine intake, as drinking more than two cups of coffee a day can lead to calcium loss.
Cut down on soft drinks. In order to balance out the phosphates in soft drinks, your body pulls calcium from your bones.
Exercise also plays a vital role in maintaining bone strength, especially walking, lifting weights, and climbing stairs.
