- Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, is used to reduce stomach acid.
Uses
- A treatment for peptic ulcer disease that reduces the recurrence of bleeding after endoscopy for acute bleeding in the stomach or duodenum in adults.
- Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
- Healing erosive esophagitis as a short-term treatment of 4 to 8 weeks.
- Treatment of Helicobacter pylori as part of a multi-drug regimen.
- Prevention of stomach ulcers associated with continuous treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Esomeprazole is associated with a reduced risk of developing glandular cancer.
Precautions and warnings
- Esomeprazole increases the incidence of osteoporosis with long-term treatment or high doses.
- Esomeprazole increases the risk of developing diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile infection.
- Increased risk of developing gastroenteritis.
- Acute nephritis has been observed in patients undergoing long-term treatment with proton pump inhibitors.
- Proton pump inhibitors reduce the effect of clopidogrel.
Side effects
- It may cause headaches, dizziness, irritability, bloating, and drowsiness.
- It may cause diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.
- It may cause coughing.
